"It Don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing..."

That's the phrase The Duke is most famous for, and we'll be hearing a lot of swing and a lot of Duke Ellington famous tunes when Cleveland Watkiss, Tom Harrison, Robert Mitchell, Conor Chaplin and David Lyttle come to Seven Arts with "The Music of Duke Ellington" on Thursday 9 March. Lots of other concerts to look forward to as well this coming month - for example talented sax player Trish Clowes and the Glow Quartet, superbly gifted composer and pianist Elliot Galvin and our first Latin Jazz double header with Toco Madera and Vanessa Rani's band. Our busy month starts with two lovely jazz singers

 Alice Higgins vocals, Will Blackstone trumpet, Conall Mulvenna guitar and Roz MacDonald bass. Tiptoe give a fresh soulful perspective on the music of Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, plus r&b and soul as they celebrate the oneness of musical styles that are too often regarded as distinct or unrelated. "Unfolding in Tempo". The Music of Duke Ellington - Cleveland Watkiss/Tom Harrison @Seven Arts Thus 9 Mar 8.00pm 
Cleveland Watkiss vocals; Robert Mitchell: piano; Tom Harrison: sax; Conor Chaplin: bass; David Lyttle: drums. A joyful celebration of the music of the jazz legend Duke Ellington and his long-time collaborator Billy Strayhorn. The band features internationally recognised vocal star Cleveland Watkiss, as well as MOBO nominee David Lyttle and Steinway artist Robert Mitchell.  “Duke Ellington is the daddy of our music. I’ve performed his work many times, but in this setting I can explore his music with a freedom I’ve never had before. When the music starts, anything can happen!” Cleveland Watkiss. 5.30 Toco Madera : Tom Sharp trumpet, Jess Clarke vibraphone, Matthew Aplin piano, Sam Dutton-Taylor bass guitar, Alan Drever-Smith percussion, Brendan Bache- drums and percussion. 
Toco Madera are a Latin jazz sextet based in Leeds, playing a variety of original compositions and arrangements of popular songs from both the jazz and pop idioms. Vanessa Rani is a singer originally from Leeds now based in London. Rush Hour Jazz with Ros Lewis  @Seven Arts Bar Wed 15 Mar 6pm
Chapel Allerton's own jazz chanteuse Ros Lewis is back at our March Rush Hour Jazz with the Seven Jazz trio to entertain you on your way home - guitarist Will Powell, Steve Crocker on bass and Dom Moore on drums. Dave Lewis will be guesting on trombone too. All topped-off by the infectious joy-filled voice of Ros. Music starts 6pm finishes 7pm. Payf bucket collection. March Inkwell Jazz Jam @Inkwell 19 Mar 1.30pm

Both exceptional musicians, Gareth and Trish have worked together a few times in the last year or so, and recently decided to create a more formal collaboration in the Glow Quartet . The idea behind the band is to bring generations and styles of musicians/music together, playing arrangements of standards plus originals by the two of them. Elliot Galvin is one of the rising stars of UK jazz. A superbly gifted composer and pianist, with a  maverick imagination and magpie like ability to blend a disparate world of influences into his own unique musical vision. "He’s the kind of artist you always want to stay tuned in to, because you know he’s going to keep on coming up with surprises." - John Fordham (The Guardian). Seven Jazz Workshops and Choir@Inkwell
